PM Oli to seek vote of confidence today

KP Sharma Oli

Pokhara—Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is going to take a vote of confidence today. President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called a house of representatives’ special session for this reason. The house session scheduled for 1 pm this afternoon. It has also been speculated that PM Oli might resign from his post before going for the floor test.

There is a slim chance that PM Oli will get a vote of confidence as the ruling CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal faction is likely not to vote for him. CPN-UML lawmakers who support MK Nepal are about to resign from their post now. Earlier last night, MK Nepal had written a letter to PM Oli to come up with initiation for united CPN-UML. MK Nepal with six-point demands also set a deadline for 9 am that has already ended. PM Oli also requested MK Nepal and his supporter lawmakers not to resign from their post for the sake of united UML.

PM Oli needs 136 votes to retain in the post. His party CPN-UML has 121 votes including from MK Nepal faction, opposition Nepali Congress has 61 lawmakers, CPN-MC has 49 and JSP has 32 lawmakers. Similarly, RPP, RJM, NMKP has one lawmaker each. There are a total of 275 lawmakers in Nepal’s parliament but some are suspended and some have passed away.

If PM Oli gets a vote of confidence, he will remain in his chair but if not, President Bhandari will reappoint Oli as PM as per article 76- 3 of Nepal’s Constitution. This section states about the largest party’s government. Now Oli is enjoying the power as per article 76- 2. Initially, the majority government was formed as per 76-1 following the unification of CPN-UML and CPN-MC but later Apex Court asked for a new party name, informing both parties that the name they picked had already been registered. Then, they didn’t go with the new party name but remained in their mother parties.
