One killed in police firing, probe over Kanchanpur rape case begins

Pokhara—Newly formed panel to probe Kanchanpur rape case has started its task on Friday. The government had transferred the Chief District Officer and Superintendent of Police of Kanchanpur the day before and formed a panel led by Home Ministry joint secretary Hari Prasad Mainali following the tense over the rape and murder case of 13-year-old Nirmala Panta of that district.

According to newly arrived CDO Taranath Adhikari, the panel in first phase has interacted with local administration and police. The interaction with keens and stakeholders will be started tomorrow. DIG Ram Prasad Shrestha, APF DIG Basanta Baniya, National Investigation Department Director Laxman Gurung and Province 7 Law Ministry deputy secretary Birendra KC are in the panel.

Kanchanpur CDO Adhikari replaced CDO Kumar Bahadur Khadka and SSP Kuber Kadayat replaced SP Dilli Raj Bista. Nirmala from Bhimdutta Municipality- 2, Ultakham was raped and murdered on July 27, 2018 and her dead body was found on July 28 at a sugarcane field in Bhimdutta Municipality- 18, Nimbukheda.

The curfew imposed by local administration in Kanchanpur yesterday also was lifted this morning. Local people yesterday and Nepali Congress student wing Nepal Student Union today demonstrated and urged to arrest and punish the real culprit of Nirmala rape case. Police today also opened fire on demonstrators and one of the demonstrators Shani khuna, 14, is said to be killed in firing. Five others are said to be injured.
