Pokhara–Special Court on Thursday acquitted six football players including former captain of national football team Sagar Thapa who had been implicated in the case of match-fixing.
A bench of judges Baburam Regmi, Pramod Kumar Baidya and Narayan Prasad Pokharel gave clean chit to Sagar Thapa, Sandip Rai, Ritesh Thapa, Anjan KC, Bikash Singh Kshetri, and team physiotherapist Dejiv Thapa of match-fixing, on Thursday.
Sagar including his four associates were arrested for match fixing charge on On October 14, 2015. The case was lodged against them for plotting against the nation. But they had been released on bail on November 10 last year. Anjan and Ritesh paid Rs 500,000, Sagar paid Rs 150,000, and the rest paid Rs 50,000 bail respectively. Anjan was arrested on separate charge of betting in various sports matches.
The five accused admitted their involvement in match fixing of international football matches since 2008 to the police officials. However, they had refuted the indictment made against them in the court.
With the charges leveled against them for match-fixing, the FIFA had banned them from playing in the international football games.
