One killed in Jhapa clashes over a child death protest

Jhapa—At least one person was killed and 10 other injured in a police firing when a clashes broke out in Birthamod of Nepal’s Jhapa district on Friday. Ilaka Police Office Birtamod DSP Raj Kumar Silwal confirmed the death of Naba Raj Thapa (Rajesh), 32 from Arjundhara Municipality- 11, in clashes. He succumbed to injury when he was being rushed to Mechi Zonal Hospital.

There is still tense in Birtamod and protesters torched Birtamod Municipality Mayor Dhurba Siwakoti’s vehicle of Ba 10 Cha 3061. Earlier, Chief District Office has imposed curfew in Birtamod as the tension went violent. Protesters came to the street accusing the police of doing dillydally on the probe of a murder of Laxman siwakoti, 11 of Arjundhara Municipality of Jhapa. Police fired dozens of tear gas cells and rubber bullets to control the mob.

But the protesters challenged the curfew and came to the street where Thapa was killed. According to news report, Siwakoti had vanished as he taking leisure time out of his home on September 30 but later his dead body was found within 24 hours in a bush of Birtamod- 1, Baisawadi.

In this scenario, today local people picketed police office citing the delay in probe though police had arrested three suspects earlier. As police tried to disperse the protesters the situation went violent. SP Bishnu KC informed that an unidentified curfew has been imposed since 1 pm in Birtamod today. The treatment of injured is undergoing in B and C medical college, Mechi Zonal Hospital and a local hospital.
