Jakarta—A huge explosion and blaze at a fireworks factory near the Indonesian capital has claimed at least 47 people and injured dozens other, police informed.
Tangerang police chief Hary Kurniawan informed that the death toll could rise as many victims suffered severe burns in the fire at a factory nearby a residential area in the city in Banten province, in the western outskirts of capital city Jakarta.
Hary said that all 47 bodies have been recovered so far and they were found in the remains of the factory and the search operation is undergoing. Police said the fire broke out after a bang and that the factory’s ceiling had collapsed.
Mr Kurniawan told to reporters that dozens of wounded people were being cured at three hospitals.The factory, with more than 105 workers, began production less than two months ago, he said.
Indonesia’s MetroTV, quoting a local authority, said that although the factory had a permit, its nearness to a residential area was against the regulation.
