Two killed in Darjeeling unrest

Darjeeling—At least two persons were killed in as violence broke out in Darjeeling On Friday morning. The clashed erupted as security personnel tried to arrest Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader Bimal Gurung. Deceased are identified as a protestor and an assistant sub-inspector.

The incident occurred after 16 days of three and a half month long strike as police were searching for leader Gurung. Bimal Gurung is wanted by the Bengal government over deadly clashes and a 104-day shut down that rocked the Darjeeling region this summer.

Security personnel had started their raid at Lapchey settlement at around 5 am. Darjeeling people have been protesting for separate Gorkhaland state in northeast hill for years. More than 13 persons have been killed since June 8 in Darjeeling.
