Impeachment motion against CJ Karki withdrawn

Pokhara—The impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been withdrawn today. The motion was registered in parliament secretariat on April 30, 2017.

The motion was withdrawn following the protest of main opposition CPN-UML. Ruling CPN-MC and NC were said to be agreed on withdrawing the motion as per the agreement clinched with opposition UML.

CPN-UML also warned of barring the presentation of Budget if the motion was not withdrawn. Following the withdrawal of motion, the budget now is being presented by Finance Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara in parliament.

Following the registration of impeachment motion, Karki was automatically suspended as the CJ of Supreme Court of Nepal but later the court reinstated her duty, issuing a stay order on May 5. The court also directed the parliament to idle the motion. Advocate duos Sunil Ranjan Singh and Kanchan Krishna Neupane had filed a writ petition against the impeachment motion on May 1.

The motion was proposed by NC lawmaker Min Bdr BK and CPN-MC lawmaker Tek Bdr Basnet and it was withdrawn following their application wrote to the parliament today.
