UNITRAV agitates against hoteliers’ decision

Recentfusion.com—Pokhara: Union of Trekking Travels Rafting Airlines Workers’ Nepal (UNITRAV) Western Regional Committee Pokhara has warned of banning tourists from entering the Annapurna Region since September 1.

Issuing a press statement with three point protest program, UNITRAV Pokhara President Bijay KC mentioned that the committee will return back trekkers if the local hoteliers and club members don’t withdraw their decision about ticket/coupon system they imposed to guide, porters and trekkers in Annapurna Base Camp Trek which is also known as Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.

The workers’ union has given an ultimatum of August 21 to meet their demands that the entrepreneurs should scrap the booking system in accommodation; imposed above the Chhomrong. Tourism Management Committee (TMC) Chhomrong has imposed a coupon system in between Chhomrong and Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 M) along the sanctuary trek.

Workers’ union also warned of shutting down the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)’s tourist check points and the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) counters run by Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Western Regional Association Pokhara, in Annapurna Region, one of the world popular trekking destinations.

The union has decided to hold meeting with TAAN, ACAP, hoteliers and other stake holders to solve the problem until August 21. Workers have also demanded to stop syndicate and monopoly in accommodation in Annapurna Region. They also demanded to stop misbehaving to workers and to stop coming into the room to collect the accommodation tariff from workers. But TMC Chhomrong President Indra Mani Sharma vowed that the committee won’t withdraw its decision.
