Normal life crippled due to bandh in Gandaki Province

Pokhara—Normal life in Gandaki Province has been crippled when some indigenous groups and fringe parties organized a protest programs on Monday. Citing that the Gandaki which is the newly declared name of then Province 4 doesn’t represent the identity of some indigenous nationalities, Tamuwan Magarat Struggle Committee has called a bandha for this day.

Almost all the shops in headquarter Pokhara have been closed and public including big number of private vehicles are not being plied in the road. Only ambulance, press vehicles and security vehicles could be seen in the road. Hospital and some pharmacies are giving their services. It was raining here in Pokhara till 11 am this morning and that also helped protesters and strike program.

The struggle committee has condemned the declaration of Gandaki and also had held a funeral rally in Pokhara before cremating the name of Gandaki in Seti River on July 8. The release signed by struggle committee Coordinator Ms Karma Tamu states that the Gandaki was not an appropriate name for this province and the name doesn’t represent the identity of the indigenous community. According to her, this province should be named Tamuwan-Magarat.

Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities, Naya Shakti Nepal, Federal Socialist Forum and Desbhakta Janatantrik Morcha also are supporting the one day province bandh.
