Water hyacinth removing drive underway in Begnas Lake

Recentfusion.com–Pokhara:  The water hyacinth removing campaign has been undergoing in Begnas Lake for few weeks.  Begnas is the third largest lake of Nepal.  As the lake is one of the key attractions of tourists, local people and tourism entrepreneurs taking initiative to remove the hyacinth from the lake.

Begnas Fishery Entrepreneur Association in cooperation with SEED Foundation, Lekhnath Municipality, Hotel Association Lekhnath and LIBIRD have removed that aquatic weed from the beautiful lake. According to SEED Foundation Director Damodar Bhakta Thapak, the cleaning drive will be going on until the hyacinth is removed fully from the lake.

Syankhudi, Dam Side and Maladi areas are mostly occupied by water hyacinth and the weed is reducing the beauty of touristy lake. More than 0.3 million rupees expenses is expected to remove the hyacinth. The removing drive had stopped as Nepal saw a massive earthquake in last year’s April 12. Only few hyacinths can grow in the summer if the cleaning drive is launched in winter season.

The lake has been facing water hyacinth for 15 years and its covering area is going up every year since there is not proper and sustainable plan of hyacinth wiping out.

Because of the hyacinth, fishermen have been facing the problem to span their nets, boat rowers facing difficulties to move their boats and even lake is being polluted day by day, informed local tourism entrepreneur Durga Prasad Adhikari.

According to boat entrepreneur Dhaka Nath Kandel, Begnas Lake covers the area of 373 hectors and more than 250 boats are registered here. Around 40 hotel and restaurants are serving the tourists basing around Beganas Lake. Dozens of fishermen and their families also rely on the fishery business based on this lake, informed Govinda Jalari.
