West Bengal–At least 36 people have been killed and several other are missing when a bus plunged into a canal in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Monday, Indian media report. The bus belonging to the North Bengal State Transport Corporation was travelling from Karimpur in Nadia district to Malda.
60 passengers were travelling the bus and it fell into Ghagra canal after crashing with a bridge railing in Daulatabad area of Murshidabad. The driver of the bus was accused of speaking over the phone as the accident happened, PTI reports.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee travelled to the accident site to observe the situation. The state government announced Rs 5 lakh compensation to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 compensation to the injured. Those who were severely injured in the accident will receive Rs 1 lakh.
