London—At least 12 persons were killed as fire borke out in 4-storey Grenfell Tower block in West London the day before. More than two hundred firefighters and dozens of fire engines were struggling to put out the blaze that engulfed the tower block, the Metropolitan Police informed.
Footage on social media showed the building engulfed in fire, with flames stretching over a number of floors. CNN and BBC had televised the thick cloud of smoke rising from the blazes. People were being treated for smoke inhalation and police are moving crowd back from the scene.
London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Dan Daly said that firefighters worked extremely hard in very uneasy conditions to exhaust this fire. London mayor Sadiq Khan made a tweet: “Major incident declared at Grenfell Tower in Kensington”
One witness, Reo, told Sky News: “I was in my kitchen and heard smoke alarms.”I could see the whole right side of the building was on fire.”The fire broke out shortly before 1am on Wednesday at Grenfell Tower that has 120 apartments in Latimer Road near Notting Hill.
But London Fire Brigade informs there is no clear cause at the moment for the incident. The tower was constructed in 1974, had recently undergone a key refurbishment.
