Man Bahadur GC becomes Pokhara Mayor

By Rup Narayan Dhakal : Pokhara—Man Bahadur GC from main opposition CPN-UML has been elected as Mayor of Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City today. Similarly Manju Devi Gurung from same party also became the Deputy Mayor of Nepal largest metropolitan city.

According to Election Commission, GC garnered 60,118 votes while his nearest rival ruling Nepali Congress candidate Ramjee Kunwar bagged 46,416 votes. At the same time, Gurung garnered 56,448 and her nearest rival Sarswoti Gurung received 44,338 votes in first phase of local election that held on May 14.

57-year old GC was born in then Kalika village development committee- 5 (now Pokhara Lekhnath- 28) Kaski in a peasant family. He has been in politics for about 4 decades. GC has his spouse and two daughters and 1 son. Likewise, 56-year old Manju was born in Sirubari of Syangja district. She has been in political sector for more than 2 decades. Gurung has 1 son and 1 daughter but husband had passed away some 25 years ago.

CPN-UML won the chairman of 22 out of 33 wards in that metropolitan city. Rest ward chairmen were won by Nepali Congress. CPN-UML won the ward chair of 1, 5, 7, 13 to 21, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 33.  A total of 126,348 voters took part in the election out of eligible 168,068 in Pokhara Metropolitan City.

There are five local units including Pokhara Lekhnath Metroplitan City in Kaski District. Out of them CPN-UML won Chairman in Pokhara Lekhnath and other three Rural Municipalities- Rupa, Madi and Machhapuchhre. Nepali Congress won only one that is Annapurna Rural Municipality.

In total, CPN UML bagged the top post in 122 local unites, while NC and CPN-MC 104 and 46 respectively in first phase of election till now. 7 units were won by other parties and independent candidates. The polls were held in 283 local units of province number 3, 4 and 6 of Nepal.The polling date for 2nd phase of polls for provinces 1,2,5 and 7 is slated for 14 June.
