Recentfusion.com—Pokhara: The Government has imposed The Unified Development Project for the Conservation of Rupa Lake in Kaski District on Sunday. Irrigation Minister Deepak Giri inaugurated that project amid a formal program organized in the bank of Rupa Lake which has been encroaching by human and sedimentation for decades.
The 12th meeting of council of minister had decided to conserve Rupa Lake which is 3rd largest among the 9 Pokhara Valley lakes. The dam with 600 meter long, 12 meter width in base, 5 meter high under the soil and 4 meter high from the ground will be built from Sishteni Ghat to Subedi Tunda to conserve the Rupa Lake. Before the construction of dam, the compensation for 855 ropanis of land will be distributed to the owners, informed Rupa Lake Rehabilitation and Fishery Cooperation president Kul Prasad Adhikari.
The area of lake reduced to 107 hectors from 135 hectors in 41 years.The height of the water in lake is now 6 meters and three meters will be added following the construction of dam covering the water area of 174 hectors.
Nepal Government Chief Secretary Dr. Som Lal Subedi, Parliament’s Development Committee Chairman Rabindra Adhikari, former speaker Tara Natha Ranabhat, Lawmaker Yagya Bahadur Thapa, former minister Khaga Raj Adhikari and including other leaders and locals spoke about the conservation and compensation in the formal program.
Rupa Lake which produces 40 tons of fishes annually is also famous for 450 spices of flora and fauna. According to research, the lake also attracts Siberian birds and researchers. The government has allocated 1 billion rupees budget for that conservation work to develop the Eco-tourism in the area.
