Rescue workers are searching the stuck people in the rubble of collapsed buildings. Disaster officials fear the death toll will rise as there have gone missing dozens of people, told Tatang Sulaiman, military chief of Aceh command area to international media.
According to US Geological Survey, the earthquake was 6.5 of magnitude that struck 92 kilometers from the provincial Captial, Banda Aceh. According to information, the earthquake happened at around 5 am local time of Indonesia.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said that some people managed to get out of their homes many were crushed in collapsed buildings. Soldiers, police and villagers are busy in rescue task in the site of quake hit zone.
Excavators were busy to remove rubble from various houses, shops and official buildings where people were believed trapped underneath.
In the capital Jakarta, President Joko Widodo said he has ordered all government agencies to take part in rescue efforts, AP reported.
