Recentfusion.com—Pokhara: A charter plane carrying 81 people on board crashed in Colombia last night. The plane en route to Medillin’s airport from Bolivia was also a flight of top Brazilian soccer team headed for a championship match, international media report.
The AP reports citing Colombian police that five passengers have survived in the accident. Commander of Medellín police General José Acevedo said that 76 people had been killed and six others had been wounded and rescued from the accident site. According to him, one of the rescued passengers died on the way to the hospital.
Medellin’s mayor, Federico Gutierrez, termed it “a tragedy of huge proportions.” Heavy rain and poor weather conditions made it difficult for rescue teams to reach the crash site, but the search operation continued despite heavy rain.
As pert the Washington Post report, the aircraft was taking members of the Chapecoense Real soccer team, based in southern Brazil, for the finals of the Copa Sudamerica against Atletico Nacional of Medellin. There were 72 passengers including 21 journalists and 9 crew members aboard.
The plane declared an emergency about 10 PM Monday local time due to an electrical disorder before being crashed near Rionegro of Colombia. Initially the plane was took off from Brazil and took stopover in Santa Cruz before leaving for Colombia.
