Pokhara—Krishna Chandra Nepali Pokhrel has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Gandaki Province on Saturday. Gandaki Province Governor Sita Kumari Paudel appointed Pokhrel as the CM in line with Article 168-5 of Nepal’s Constitution.
Governor Paudel had called province assembly members to stake a claim for the CM with majority votes on June 11 giving the deadline of 3 PM today, as caretaker CM Prithvi Subba Gurung failed to garner the trust votes in the parliament as per Article 168-4.
Following the governor’s letter, NC Gandaki Parliamentary leader Pokhrel staked the claim for a new CM with 31 signatures of lawmakers from NC, CPN-MC, JSP and RJM and independent lawmaker. Gandaki Province has a total of 60 members including a Speaker. To make a majority government, the member should collect the trust of 31 lawmakers.
72-year-old Pokhrel was born in Tanahun district and was elected as a lawmaker from Nawalparasi- 1 (Ka). NC former central committee member Pokhrel needs to prove trust votes within a month.
