20 arrested during Manipal clash

Pokhara—Police have arrested 20 persons for allegedly involving in the vadalization of Pokhara base Manipal Teaching Hospital on Monday morning. According to Province 4 Police Office SP Birendra Kumar Basyal, DPO Kaski police arrested non-teaching staffers, staff nurses, drivers, staffers of pharmacy and housekeeping including Manipal Hospital Trade Union Chairman Nabaraj Bhandari as they started vandalism at Dean Office’s door at around 9 am.

According to hospital administration, almost all the services despite emergency ward were closed following the incident in the hospital. It has been claimed that around 7 persons from police and same number from protesters’ side were injured during the clashed between them. Police lathi charged on protesters as they allegedly pelted stones and chairs to the police.

Staffers from Manipal have been protesting for more than 9 months and they have been staging sit in along the Dean Office from 9 am to 12 pm for 12 days. They have been demanding their wage hike including the permanent status and perks. Around 1,000 patients reach Manipal daily to have health services.
