Pokhara—At a time when some of the Pokhara lakes have been facing with aquatic weeds like water hyacinth, Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City Office has bought a aquatic plant harvesting machine to remove that kinds of weeds from those lakes.

Lakes are major attractions of touristy town Pokhara but they have been facing the epidemic of water hyacinth. Human encroachment, sedimentation and pollutions are major factors that are making the lakes’ area smaller than before.

There appear more water hyacinths in Phewa Lake than in other lakes of Kaski district. The hyacinth covers most of the Phewa surface during summer season. The hyacinth not only hampers in the beauty of Phewa but also creates obstacles to row the boats.

The machine worth Rs 12.5 million was bought in Candada and was brought to Pokhara. The machine also operated in Phewa Lake this afternoon. According to information, Rs 5 million was managed from Constituency Infrastructure Development Fund. Lawmaker Rabindra Adhikari played vital role in buying this machine.

According to Phewa Lake Conservation Project engineer Mahendra Bahadur Godar, the newly arrived machine will help to remove water hyacinth easily from the lakes. Phewa lake covers 9,956 ropanis of land.
