Pokhara—Former lawmaker and CPN-MC leader Bal Krishna Dhungel has been sent to jail after eight year of his conviction today. Supreme Court of Nepal had convicted Dhungel on Push 19, 2066 for life imprisonment with property seizure in a Asar 10, 2055 BS murder case of Ujjan Kumar Shrestha of Okhaldhunga- Pokali but he was not arrested for long.
Nepal Police- Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) nabbed Dhungel from his rented room from Lalipur Satdobato this morning at around 11 am and was sent to Dillibazaar Sadarkhana jail to serve his sentence. Dhungel has been arrested at a time when there is left 26 days to have a provincial and parliamentary elections in Nepal and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is bearing the responsibility of Home Minister.
Nepal had waged a decade long people’s war started from 2052 BS and Dhungel was convicted one of the same war era crimes. As Nepal Government and then Maoists clinched a Comprehensive Peace Accord in 5 Mangsir of 2064 BS, there was raised a demand that Dhungel’s case must be addressed as per the aspiration of peace accord instead of existing law of Nepal.
As advocate Dinesh Tripath filed a case of contempt of court against Inspector General Police Prakash Aryal on Kartik 7, 2074, there was a pressure for Nepal Police to arrest Dhungel. Supreme Court had ordered then IGP to arrest Dhungel on 31 Chait, 2073 BS however the order was not followed. Earlier Dhungel was convicted by District Court in BS 2061 Baisakh 21 and had served jail term but later, the appellate court revoked the case in 2063 and Dhungel was released from the jail. Now the Dhungel has to serve 12.5 year of jail term as per the order of Kathmandu District Court today.
