Death toll reachs 31 in Trishuli bus plunge–Updated

Pokhara—At least 31 persons including eight from a single family of Saptari were killed and 19 other injured when a passenger bus plunged in Trishuli River along the Prithvi Highway this morning. 14 dead bodies have been recovered and the identity of 12 persons have been known and others’ is yet to be known.

The Sandesh Travels bus with a number plate Na 6 Kha 1467 met with an accident as it arrived near Okhare Khola in Gajuri Rural Municipality- 5 of Dhanding district, Nepal on Saturday at 5.30 am. Police have rescued 16 persons from the incident site. Injured are being treated at Gajuri Community Hospital and two of the injured were rushed to Trauma Center Kathmandu. The bus was heading for Kathmandu.

The bus was heading for Kathmandu from Rajbiraj of Saptari with 17 passengers however several other boarded while on the way; so it is still unclear that how many passengers were travelling the ill fated bus. Police guess some 60 passengers were travelling the bus. High speed has been blamed for the accident.

The bus could be seen in the water of Trishuli and a crane is trying to take the bus out. Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, Red Cross and local people are in the site for rescue operation. A team of divers is also busy in search and rescue operation. Several other went missing during the accident.
