Cairo–At least 52 Egyptian police and conscripts were died and six more hurt in a gun fight on Friday during a raid on a suspected militant hideaway in the western desert, security sources confirmed.

Sources had informed late on Friday at least 30 police were shot dead. Egypt is suffering an Islamist insurgency concentrated in the Sinai Peninsula from two major groups, including an Islamic State affiliate that has gun down hundreds of security forces for four years.

The interior ministry made public a statement on the operation on Friday but has so far not taken out any details on casualties. At least 23 police officers were killed and the other victims were conscripts, the source claimed.
