Renu Dahal elected Bharatpur Mayor

Chitwan—Renu Dahal of the CPN-MC has been elected as a Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City on August 6. She is the daughter of the party’s chairman and former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda. She defeated her nearest rival CPN-UML’s candidate Devi Gyawali by 203 votes.

Dahal garnered 43,127 votes while Gyawali received t 42,924 votes in the re-polling held in Ward number 19 of the metropolis on Friday. Similarly, Parbati Shah of Nepali Congress (NC) won deputy-mayor post with 47,197 votes. Her nearest rival Divya Sharma of CPN-UML bagged 39,535 votes.
A re-election was carried out in Bharatpur-19 after the Maoist Center representatives tore 90 ballot papers on May 28 midnight while vote count was undergoing for the first phase of local level elections completed on May 14.

Following the ballot paper tearing incident, the CPN-UML had demanded to resume the vote count while the NC and Maoist Center had urged the Election Commission (EC) to conduct a re-election in this ward.
The EC had decided to hold elections once again, prompting the UML to file a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC) against the EC’s decision. The SC upheld the EC’s decision, making the way for a re-polling.
