Mumbai Indian clinched the title of Indian Premier League 2017 on Sunday. Mitchell Johnson played key role taking two runs against Pune Supergiant in final over to give the 1 run victory to his team in IPL.
The straight fall of Manoj Tiwary and Steve Smith in Johnson deliveries was shocking moments for the rival giant. Pune needed 11 runs in final over but before taking last two wickets, Johnson conceded a four off his ball.
The winner of 2013 and 2015 IPL, Mumbai Indian collected 129 runs after electing to bat first in Hyderabad. Captain Smith collected 51 runs to make Pune a beat hopeful. But Johnson’s 3-26 and Jasprit Bumrah’s 2-26 supported Mumbai defend 129 to become the first side to win three IPL championships.
The three time winner Mumbai fell to 8-2 and then 79-7, before Krunal Pandya’s 47 off 38 balls, assisted by late-order hitting from Johnson (13 off 14) saw them post 129-8.
In answer, Ajinkya Rahane hit 44 off 38 balls before he was moved out by Johnson to leave Pune on 71-2 after 12 overs. They added just 29 runs in the other five overs thanks to expert bowling from Lasith Malinga and Bumrah, who had former India captain MS Dhoni caught behind for 10.
A consecutive six from Australia captain Smith off Bumrah’s penultimate hit in the 19th over seemed to lead the match back Pune’s way, only for Johnson to hold his nerve as Dan Christian was run out attempting a desperate third run off the final ball.
