Kathmandu: Most of the Tarai areas remained affected due to the general strike organized by United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) today. UDMF protestors shut government offices, CPN-UML party offices and National Human Rights Commission offices in Tarai area against the yesterday’s killing of three people in police firing in Saptari.
Normal life in Tarai region has been crippled due to the strike. UDMF cadres carried out rallies with domestic tools and wooden sticks during their protest. They burnt tyres, vandalized few vehicles and chanted slogan against main opposition CPN-UML, urging the resignation of Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi too.
However, Biratnagar and Itahari areas remained peaceful during the strike. Nepal Telecom office, Municipality Office, Rastriya Banijya Bank office and Peace Committee offices were attacked by UDMF cadres during the strike in Saptari. UDMF cadres attacked the National Human Rights Commission vehicle and clashed with police in same district.
They have demanded to declare martyrs to the killed cadres. Compensation to the family of killed cadres, treatment to injured and probe of the yesterday’s incident were also the demands of UDMF cadres. Janakpur, Rautahat, Birgunj, Kapilvastu and Bhairahawa also remained tense during the strike.
In this connection, UDMF meeting today has given a weeklong ultimatum to government to pass constitution amendment bill and to cancel the date of civic election. The front has said it would withdraw the support to government if the above demands are not fulfilled. CPN-UML however said that the Mechi-Kali Campaign will be resumed from coming Friday.
