Recentfusion.com—Pokhara: The water hyacinth removal drive in Phewa Lake has kicked off in Pokhara on Friday.
The Phewa Lake Conservation Project under Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City Office in association with tourism related organizations and civil society members have commenced the campaign that was formally started from the Khapaudi area of Phewa Lake which is a major touristic landmark of Nepal.
The lake which is one of the key bases of Pokhara tourism has been plagued by some aquatic weed like water hyacinth which is locally known as Jalakumbhi, for around two decades. The water hyacinth cleaning drive was inaugurated by Local Development Officer Kaski chief Damodar Bhandari, in the Shore of Phewa Lake.
According to Western Regional Hotel Association Pokhara President Bharat Raj Parajuli, the concept of cleaning campaign came up as the hyacinth looting the beauty of Phewa day by day. The campaign will be continued on each Friday of every week. Security personnel, civil society members, fishermen, boatmen including tourism entrepreneurs are taking part in the campaign.
It has been claimed that, the first day saw 30 trucks of water hyacinth cleaning from the lake. The density of water hyacinth soars as the summer season begins but if, it is removed somehow in winter, the aftermath comes positive with few amount of hyacinth round the year.
The lake with an area of 4.43 square Km has been suffered from siltation by Harpan Khola, pollution by some directly submerged sewerage, laundering and encroachment by some of the locals.
