Exhibition will help to save vultures
Krishna Mani Baral is the founder of Animalrightsnepal.org. Baral, who is also a photo journalist of The Himalayan Times and Annapurna Post national dalies, is going to organize a vultures’ solo photo exhibition in Nepal Art Council Babarmahl Kathmandu from April 25 to 29. Excerpt of chitchat:
What is the inspiring factor behind the exhibition? As per the study of vultures, I knew that their number was decreasing day by day. Besides that, I could see that vultures were fighting over the bones of animal carcass to fulfill their hunger. Similarly in the lack of proper habitats, they could be seen residing on the electric pole or in the farms. So all those things touched my mind and I came with this campaign. I also must thank my friends who did inspire me for this exhibition.
Why did you choose vultures instead of any other bird or animal for the exhibition? I still remember that the cotton trees used to be full of vultures when I was young but this situation is only in dream now. Vultures used to approach the carcasses and used them up instantly that was one of the causes of clean environment. So, it was the human being that appeared responsible behind the decreasing number of vultures. That’s why we human being must step forward to save vultures and I also decided vultures for the exhibition with a slogan ‘Save Vulture, Save Environment.’
Who does achieve what return from this exhibition? I hope people who don’t know the importance of vultures and take them negatively could be alerted and positive from the exhibition. More than that, conservationists and the government also could know the state of vultures in and around the Pokhara that will help in the conservation campaign.
How are you arranging the fund to organize the exhibition? Some 45,000 rupees have been supported from various NGOs so far. Bird Conservation Nepal, National Trust for Nature Conservation, Friends of Nature, and Pokharacity.com are the major supporters. I am planning to fulfill the rest amount by selling the exhibited pictures.
Why did you decide Kathmandu as a venue when you are a Pokhara base journalist and campaigner? To pressurize the central government, who is the accountable in formulating the policy in the preservation of birds, and the experts who concern the bird conservation, I decided the Kathmandu as an exhibition venue. As per my plan, Pokhara also will see the exhibition during the World Environment Day.
