Happy Friendship Day ! Sun, August 3, 2008, 6:32 am
By Rup Narayan Dhakal Sunday Aug 3 is International Friendship Day today. Falling on the first Sunday every August, it's a day to make the most of your friends and tell them how much they mean to you.
In spite of all the conflict in the world humans are naturally sociable creatures and we all need friends. In my town, Pokhara in Nepal, young people are flocking to cyber cafes to send greetings and messages of friendship over the Internet. They seem busy in search of friendship day cards, greetings and quotes online. They are also relying on SMS as well to send their messages of goodwill.
Gift shops are also doing good business as customers want to organize parties, make posters and recollect sweet memories. In Nepal friendship day tends to be celebrated by youths and teenagers. Each year the event becomes more and more popular. Even though many people don't know about friendship day, they are still aware of the importance of having good friends.
In my opinion a true friend is someone who stands by us, loves us and tries to look out for us throughout our lives. But these days, people are becoming very selfish because they're so busy and they don't have time for their friends. This is not a good way.
The first friendship day was celebrated in the United States in 1935. Congress formally set the date on the first Sunday in August. The fashion spread to other countries. Friendship is not only about relationships between people but also about the rapport between countries. I am talking about the unrest in the some of the countries. Those countries should follow the policy of friendship and the world community should help them achieve peace and prosperity.
In Nepal, former Maoists rebels and government are in the process of peace talks. After a decade long insurgency and the loss of 14,000 lives they are now walking together in a friendly environment as if they were very close friends. Nepal's example may be a good lesson for all who wishes true friendhsip.
